P219. Ray Tracing and Image Formation by Lenses Write your solutions as directed. |
Preparation
Before doing the problems, you'll need to have studied sections 26-6 and 7. Those sections provide a guide for tracing rays for convex and concave lenses and for doing quantitative calculations. You may wish to view the following applets which show the principal rays being drawn step-by-step in three situations.
Instructions
The instructions for this assignment are the same as for P215 with this exception: Make the object large so that the rays will show clearly. If this means that you have to distort the size scale compared to the object-image distance scale, that's fine.
Problems
This assignment includes problems in ray tracing as well as in using the thin lens formula. Do the following problems from the text:
26-93a and 94a. Start each problem with a ray tracing. Use this template or, if you prefer to position the lens yourself, use this grid.
26-93b. A ray tracing isn't required.
26-61. Use this template.
26-70. These are the quantitative calculations that go along with 26-61.
