Guide to Using Logger Pro

Here are some software operations in Logger Pro that you'll be using.

Video analysis operations
Displays video analyis tool menu to right of video
Play, pause, step buttons
Set scale factor
measure distance Measure a distance
Set axes
Mark points
point series Add point series

Operation How to
Checking the interface and probe The program should automatically detect the interface and the motion detector. You can check for this by clicking on the check interface icon icon located in the upper left-hand corner of the Logger Pro window.
Adding a graph Click Insert -> Graph in the upper menu bar.
Autoarranging the page Click Page -> Auto Arrange. This automatically arranges all the windows so that there's no overlap.
Changing the length of time that data is collected Click Experiment -> Data Collection. Change the collection time in the Length window. When you change the collection time, the Time axis of all the graphs will automatically rescale unless you've set those graphs for manual scaling (see the next item).
Changing the vertical scale of a graph

By default, the vertical axes will autoscale. Here's how to scale manually.

  1. Method 1: Double-click on the graph of interest and select the Axes Options tab. Under Y-Axis, select Manual for Scaling. Then enter the Top and Bottom and values that you want.
  2. Method 2: Another method is to drag the mouse over the region of the graph that you want to enlarge. Then click the enlarge graph icon icon at the top. To return to auto-scaling, click the auto scaling icon
Changing smoothing parameters The fitting and smoothing algorithms use two parameters called Number of Points for Smoothing Calculation and Number of Points for Derivative Calculation. To reach the dialogue window to make changes, click File -> Settings for Untitled (or whatever the file name is). The default values are 7 and 7.
Starting data collection Click this button Go above the graph window. You can click the button to stop collecting data or you can just wait until the default collection time expires.
Creating a calculated column Select Data ->New Calculated Column from the menu. In the Equation window, enter the Name (long and short) of the new variable and the units. Then select the Functions and the Variables for the equation. If your equation involves pi, you can select that as a Parameter.
Creating a graph of residuals of a fit First create a New Calculated Column for the values of the dependent variable calculated from the fit. Name the column appropriately and enter the units. For the equation, enter the equation of the fit using the dependent variable and the values of the fit coefficients. When you click Done, the fit values will automatically be calculated. Now create another calculated column for the residuals. Name it Residuals of ___________ and enter the units. When you click Done, the values of the residuals will automatically be calculated. Now click Insert, Graph and select the residuals for the dependent variable. Name the graph appropriately and then Auto Arrange the page.
Adding error bars using values of the % Mean Deviation of the dependent variable Select Data ->New Manual Column from the menu. Enter % Mean Deviation for the Name. There are no units. Enter the values of the % Mean Deviation in the column. Next, double-click on the column heading for the dependent variable. In the Manual Column Options dialogue box, click on the Options tab. Make sure Error Bar Calculations, Percentage, and Use Column are selected. Then select the % Mean Deviation column. Click Done and vertical error bars will automatically be added.
