P139. Conservation of Momentum and Energy Problems

Show your work according to the methods presented in the problem-solving guides for momentum and energy.

Before attempting the problems below, study the guide to Solving Problems with both Momentum and Energy Conservation.

For the problems assigned you in the table below, prepare formal 2-part solutions according to method shown in the guide above.

Problem Nos. Student's last initial
1,3 A-Ra
2,4 Ro-W
  1. Open this applet, read the description, and run the animation. Solve the problem for the initial velocity v0 of the bullet in terms of g and these symbols:

m1 = mass of bullet
m2 = mass of block
d = distance the block slides
μk = coefficient of kinetic friction

Define any other symbols you use. As a final step, substitute values given in the applet and determine the numerical value of the initial velocity of the bullet.

  1. Open this applet, read the description, and run the animation. Solve the problem for the velocity vf of the bullet after passing through the block. Give your result in terms of g and these symbols:

m1 = mass of bullet
m2 = mass of block
d = distance the block slides
μk = coefficient of kinetic friction
vo = initial velocity of bullet

Define any other symbols you use. As a final step, substitute values given in the applet and determine the numerical value of the velocity of the bullet after passing through the block.
