Quiz Preparations and a Notification Assignment

The upcoming quiz will cover the content that you've been studying and using in Chapters 1 and 2. You can also expect to have problems similar to those in the Chapter 1 and 2 online exercises and problems, including WebAssign assessments. The link to Chapter Reviews is a permanent link on the course home page. The quiz will be on WebAssign, and you'll be limited to 45 minutes.

Download and print the list of approved equations.

On quizzes and tests, you may use the same page of equations and constants as will be provided when you take the AP Physics 1 exam in May. The link to these equations is below. Download and print the entire set. Then you can keep it in your notebook for use throughout the year. Take time to look over the pages now to see what information you will be provided. When you solve free-response problems on quizzes and tests, you may only use these equations as starting points for solutions. You must derive any other equations that you need.

Approved equations and constants for use on quizzes and tests

In addition to the equations above, you're allowed to use a calculator on quizzes and tests. We should point out that for the AP Physics B exam, you're allowed to use a calculator and the provided sheet of equations and constants for the free-response portion of the exam. However, you're not allowed to use these materials on the multiple-choice section of the exam. Therefore, it's important to know the fundamental equations from memory by the time May comes around. Practice in using the equations is the best way to commit them to memory. They become second nature to you.

Be aware that there are some differences in symbols and conventions between the College Board equation sheet and the equations used in your textbook. We recommend that you make an equation-by-equation comparison in advance of quizzes and tests.

Study Tip. The best way to study for a quiz is to keep up with your work in the course on a daily basis. Do the chapter reading, the online reviews exercises, and problems, and the written problems as they're assigned. Review your feedback after each assignment is checked, and correct your mistakes. Do extra problems from the ends of the chapters. There are plenty to choose from. Then, the night before the quiz, you don't have to cram. Instead, look over the materials covered by the quiz and do some representative problems in order to have them fresh in your mind.

Academic honesty on quizzes. We expect you to do your own work on quizzes. Use only the materials approved by the instructor. You may not communicate about the quiz in any way with other students. This includes before, during, and after taking the quiz until the instructor releases the key. The first item of each quiz is a checkoff box to indicate that you'll follow the academic honesty policy.

About quiz passwords: The only person from which you may receive the quiz password is your proctor. It's a violation of academic honesty to receive the password from another student or to provide the password to another student.

How taking a quiz on WebAssign works

This is to let you know how the quiz will work and some strategies to use while taking it.

  1. What you can use during the quiz besides your brain: calculator, list of approved equations (printed out in advance), scratch paper

  2. What you can't use: basically everything else (examples include textbook, notes, electronic devices other than a calculator, websites and software external to WebAssign, communication with anyone other than your proctor)

  3. Some questions may require Java for animations and Flash for PencilPads. Therefore, check in advance that the computer you use for the quiz has those installations. Preferably, use the same computer that you normally use for your coursework.

  4. The quiz will appear in WebAssign 6:00 AM on the quiz date and will become due at 11:59 PM the same day. So you need to start in time to finish by 11:59 PM.

  5. When you click on the quiz link in WebAssign, you'll be prompted for a password. Your proctor will give you the password at that time. Enter it and the quiz should open. That's when WA starts timing (45 minutes). You can't stop and come back later. Even if you log out, the time keeps going. So you have to do the quiz in one sitting. WebAssign displays a clock to keep you mindful of the time remaining.

  6. Pace yourself as you do the problems. Don't initially spend more than a few minutes on any one problem or part of a problem. Do as much as you can quickly; then return to the problems that will take more time. Submit items as you complete them rather than waiting to submit them all at the end. If you submit an answer and change your mind, you have up to 5 submissions. Your answers won't be checked right or wrong at this point.

  7. If you run into technical difficulties during the quiz, let your proctor know without delay.

C04. Proctor Notification

In the week preceding each quiz and test, it's the responsibility of the student to arrange with their proctor for a time to take the quiz or test and to report that information no later than the Friday preceding the quiz or test. Therefore, for the first quiz, your report is due to the instructor by Friday, 9-12, 11:59 PM. WebAssign C04 is the form on which you'll report the arrangements that you make with your proctor. Verify with your proctor the following information before you submit C04.

  • The quiz will be limited to 45 minutes and will be on WebAssign. Therefore you must have a computer available for you to use during that time. If the computer is not the one that you use for your homework, work with your proctor to verify that the computer has Flash and Java installed. You may refer the proctor to the Software page.
  • The quiz is available at 6:00 AM Wednesday, 9-17, and becomes unavailable at 11:59 PM the same day. The latest you should start the quiz is11:00 PM.
  • The instructor will send the quiz password to the proctors. Your proctor will tell you the password when you arrive to take the quiz.
  • During the quiz, you're allowed to use the equation pages printed out from the link given previously. You may also use a hand calculator. The only applications you may have open on your computer are WebAssign and Java (if required by the problem).

Each notification form will count 2 points toward your test average. All you have to do to receive those 2 points is make the arrangements with your proctor and then submit the form by the due time. If you overlook submitting the form, you don't receive the 2 points. While this will not result in a deduction from your Commitment score, not submitting the form may jeopardize your being able to take the quiz or test. The instructor only sends the quiz password (or, in the case of tests, the test file) to proctors for whom the student has submitted the notification form.
