Chapter 1 Review and Practice

Carry out the steps in the order given.

 Step 1

Chapter 1 Reading Assignment

  1. Read and study Chapter 1 of your textbook. If you don't have your textbook yet, download Chapter 1 here. We usually won't assign you to read an entire chapter at once. Chapter 1 is an exception, because you need to know that material in preparation for the first lab, which is coming up soon.

  2. There's a large library of problem-solving guides for this course. All of the guides are found at the Guides link in the menu above, so you can quickly open any guide that you wish. For now, study Sig Fig's Guide to Significant Figures.

Study Tip.  A guide to knowing what you should be getting out of the chapter, or any chapter for that matter, is the list of objectives. These lists are available for all chapters here. Note in particular the objectives for Chapter 1. One thing to do in studying for a quiz is to review the list of objectives for the chapter in order to refresh your memory about what's important to know from the chapter.

The list of objectives are also available from the Ch. Reviews link in the menu at the top.

 Step 2

  Chapter 1 Review

The publisher of your textbook has posted review pages online for all chapters. You can use these to review and practice using the concepts and relationships presented in the chapter. Since Ch. 1 is fresh in mind from having just read it, you shouldn't need to read the review now. However, carry out steps 1-3 so that you know where to find the chapter reviews in the future.

  1. Click on Ch. Reviews in the upper menu.
  2. Click on the Review link for Chapter 1.

 Step 3

  Chapter 1 Practice Questions

In addition to the Ch. Reviews, there are Practice Questions posted for each chapter. Like the Ch. Reviews, these are a study aid that you can use for practice. As soon as you submit your answers, you see the correct answers. The immediate feedback is useful for study. You can open the Practice Questions from the same page as for Ch. Reviews as described above.

 Step 4

  E.1.1.  Chapter 1 Practice Problems

In addition to the Practice Questions, there are Practice Problems posted for each chapter. As before, access them from the same page as the Ch. Reviews. Do problems 6 through 9 now. Be sure to round answers to the correct number of significant figures. Otherwise, they'll be counted wrong.

When you've finished the 4 problems, click submit for grade. Compare your responses to the correct ones and try to understand any mistakes you made. Then click New Problems to try again. The problems will be the same ones but with different numbers. When you've got them all correct, do the following in order to send your results to the instructor. Important:  Do not use the Routing Information boxes. Instead, do the following.

  1. With your mouse, select everything from Results Reporter to Your Grade. Type CTRL-C in Windows or CMD-C on a Mac to copy the text.

  2. Open BrainHoney in a new browser window and navigate to the Assignments folder. Open the assignment E.1.1.

  3. Paste the text into the assignment window by typing CTRL-V in Windows or CMD-V on a Mac.

  4. Submit the assignment.

Go on to the Significant Figures Diagnostic Quiz.
